National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation (Movie Review)

One of the funniest movies of 1997, Vegas Vacation lives up to the high standard of comic relief expected from this ongoing series by National Lampoon. Although on the low end of hilarity when compared to Vacation, European Vacation, and Christmas Vacation, the film is nonetheless a non-stop, belly-laughing comedy in its own right. After all, how can we expect anything to live up to the genius of a perfect comedy like Christmas Vacation? Complete with a brand new set of children, Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo once again form an onscreen comedy duo that is simply magical…

When Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) gets a large bonus as a company reward for inventing a new food preservative, he and his wife Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo) decide that the money would best be spent on a good old-fashioned family vacation. But when kids Rusty (Ethan Embry) and Audrey (Marisol Nichols) bicker over the destination, the only place that gets unanimous reviews from the family is a Las Vegas vacation.

Flying to Vegas, the family experiences a series of pitfalls that threatens to tear them apart forever. Clark becomes a gambling addict (even gambling on rock-paper-scissors and a guy doing a “I’m thinking of a number between one and ten” routine at a low-rent casino), Ellen becomes the target of Wayne Newton’s seduction, underage Rusty becomes a gambling superstar under the false identity of Nicholas Pappagiorgio, and Audrey tries her hand in exotic dancing after a rendezvous with her stripper cousin Vicki… Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) makes another show-stealing performance as the redneck, dumber-than-a-doorknob relative, and he shadows Clark around the casinos generously imbibing his beverage of choice – a thirty-ounce can of Busch Light.

The funniest scenes in the film involve Eddie (as always) and his trailer trash family, now living in a trailer on a parcel of land Eddie purchased cheap because it’s a burial ground for nuclear waste. And Rusty’s various exploits under the alias of Nic Pappagiorgio are extremely amusing. Meeting up with a group of quasi-mafia, professional gamblers, Rusty enjoys the massages, comp suites, and various frills associated with the biggest names in the business. Vegas Vacation is just downright funny. If you liked the earlier films, don’t miss this one…

Continuing the stellar reputation of the Vacation film series, Vegas Vacation is pure entertainment fun from beginning to end. Chevy Chase is up to his usual antics, and Wayne Newton turns in a classic performance in his role as Griswold home-wrecker. Family friendly, Vegas Vacation is a comedy made for both parents and children alike. And its role as yet another show-stopper in the long-line of Griswold comedies makes Vegas Vacation a definite must-see…

Tips to Find Cheap Vacation Deals on Craigslist

Are you trying to plan a summer vacation on a budget? If so, you are on the lookout for good deals and discounts. There are many ways to find these online, including the popular classified website Craigslist.org. How can you ensure you get the best deal?

Watch out for scams. Scams are all over the internet and many target cheap vacation seekers. You are likely to find some scams right on Craigslist. Although they vary, you may find a seller who claims to have Disney tickets, but they really don’t. You send them the money and they up and run. Or, you may have a fraud who takes pictures from the internet claiming they own a vacation rental. You pay, but once you arrive at the destination and see another building in its place, you are heartbroken. Not only that, but you are also out your money and don’t have a place to stay!

Read all Craigslist listings carefully. Both Disneyland and Disney World are classified as resorts. You might assume that resort tickets include a stay at an onsite hotel, but they usually don’t. Most times, you are just buying admission tickets. When looking for cheap vacation deals on Craigslist.org, never assume. Always read postings carefully and ask lots of questions. This is another good way to avoid a fraud too.

Know what you are looking for. While knowing what you want to do or where you want to go for your summer vacation is not required, it can save you time. There are usually hundreds of vacation deals and other related services offered just on your local Craigslist page. It can take you hours to get through them all. Eliminate this by using good search phrases. For example, search for Six Flags if you want to travel to Six Flags, Disneyland or Disney World for a Disney Resort, charter for a private sailboat charter, and so forth.

Finally, search more than just your local pages. What if you live in Orlando and want cheap Disney tickets, but a seller who lives in Daytona Beach is selling them? You miss out. Craigslist does not allow multi-city searches, but you can use a Craigslist search tool instead. Search all of Craigslist, entire states, or multiple cities at once to find the best cheap vacation deals today.

Vacation Rental Etiquette

So, you’ve decided to stay at a privately owned vacation rental home. The travel dates are set, the reservation is made and now you wait, excitedly for your vacation to begin.

But wait, we have always stayed at hotels, so how’s this work exactly? Will there be toilet paper provided? What about hand soap, and laundry soap?

It’s good that you’re asking these questions now, because staying at a privately owned vacation rental home is significantly different than staying at a hotel. What you give up in convenience, you gain in amenities and freedom.

Most vacation rental home owners, make sure the basics are there for your arrival, but remember, this is the next best thing to staying in your own home, and who provides the supplies there? You do, of course!

No owner wants their guests to arrive needing to use the restroom, only to find there are no restroom supplies available. But, they’re not going to provide supplies for your entire stay, either.

So, you should plan on that, and budget for that. One of the first things you will want to do, upon your arrival, is to look around to see what is there, and make a list of what you need.

Most likely you’ll be surprised to find food and other supplies that have been left by either the vacation rental home owner or previous guests. The rule of thumb is, what you find is yours to use.

It’s also normal to find multiples of some food supplies. Everybody has their own comfort level, and preferences. Don’t be surprised if you find a couple jars of peanut butter, and other such supplies. Again, you’re welcome to use them, but if that makes you uncomfortable, just add that item to your shopping list.

Generally the cleaning crew has been instructed to remove anything that can spoil or attract unwanted critters. While we’re on this subject, when you leave try to dispose of anything that will spoil, or will attract bugs.

You may also find non-food items such as bar soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, dish soap, sun block, etc. You are welcome to use them, but they may not be your brand or whatever. So, just leave them for the next guests.

Once you’ve looked around and taken an inventory, make a grocery list and go shopping. You’ll want to stock up for your stay and you should plan to replace anything you use. You certainly don’t want to leave the property without essential items like toilet paper and soap.

It’s kind of a “pay-it-forward” philosophy. The idea being if you leave it well stock for the next guest, they’ll do the same for the guests after them, etc. Hopefully, you’ll benefit the next time you stay at a privately owned vacation rental, and the home will be well stocked for you, upon your arrival.

Always remember you are staying at somebody’s home. Yes, you’re paying rent and yes it’s your right to use it, but use it with respect. If you move an end table or a lamp, you should return those items to there original location.

If you break something, be responsible and replace it if you can, or offer to repair or share the cost. In the least, let the vacation home rental owner know, so that the item can be replaced for subsequent guests. Most vacation rental home owners understand about wear and tear, but common courtesy and consideration are very much appreciated.

Remember, staying at a vacation rental home is not that different than staying at a relative’s home. Would you use up all their supplies; would you rearrange their furniture without permission? What if you broke something, wouldn’t you be responsible and either fix it, replace it or at least notify your relative? Just use some common sense and courtesy, and everybody will be happy.

Staying at a privately owned vacation rental is a great experience that allows families to vacation together comfortably. If you feel the need to be pampered, then staying at a hotel where there’s plenty of staff available to cater to your needs, is probably a better choice for you.

But if you enjoy your privacy, and like the idea of getting up in the morning and having a cup of coffee while sitting by the side of the pool in your PJ’s, then a privately owned vacation rental can’t be beat!

Vacation Scams – How to Spot Them

Again, your mother was right. Actually, she was right twice. One, nothing in life is free and two, if sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

One of the biggest and longest running scams to date is the Vacation Fraud, where you or a loved one is told that they have won a free vacation package or a glamorous cruise getaway. If not totally “free”, these “agents” say that they can get you that dream tour for a rock-bottom price. At this point, you, like many other law-abiding citizens start thinking “what could possibly go wrong?” A lot, apparently.

Let’s just start with the obvious: you will not get a free vacation. Granted, there are rare packages out there from reputable travel agencies that may be free, but err on the side of caution. The most common travel and vacation scams include the following:

The Dubious Travel Agency Scam – You are called and told you are getting a free vacation package but you must pay “fees” to reserve this opportunity. Then after you pay these fees, the “travel agency” can no longer be found. Their phone line has been disconnected and there is no way you can get your money back. Another variation of this scam is telling you that you’ve been booked on a luxurious vacation trip verycheaply, but this is only for a “limited time”. You are then asked to pay a “reservation fee” immediately (and this is usually a big amount) to assure your slot. It’s only after payment that the “travel agent” tells you that your vacation dates are not available or, after some time, will tell you that the offer has already “expired”. Then the “Agent” also disappears, along with your money.

Plane Tickets for Free- Here, they call you and say you have won two plane tickets to great spots like the Bahamas. What they’re not saying is that you must book your hotel and buy your meals from the company that’s giving away the tickets. If you stop and do the math before you accept this “free ticket” offer, you can easily calculate that the amount for food and accommodation easily covers the cost of a plane fare because prices have been so inflated.

The “Free Vacation” – You fly all the way to Hawaii or Mexico, ready to start your vacation, but you find out that you are booked in a small and dirty hostel with bad food. If you check out, they tell you that you void your return ticket. So, you can either stay in your bad hotel or pay a horribly inflated fee to get out of it so you can sleep in a decent hotel.

The Time Share Scam – You are given a free vacation, but before you enjoy it, you have to sit through a presentation from a timeshare salesman. Sometimes, you’re not even told about the obligatory timeshare lecture before you reach your destination. Oftentimes, to get food tickets and accommodation, people have been forced to sit in through long lectures and end up being forced to sign contracts that are also fraudulent. In some cases, when the vacationers try to get away, they have been subjected to bullying and other unscrupulous tactics from these sales agents.

“Become a Travel Agent” Scam – Someone tells you that you’re better off to be a travel agent because it saves you a lot of money in the long run. As a travel agent, they say, you get a lot of discounts and freebies while you’re on holiday. The catch is, you have to pay them a “fee” to become an instant travel agent and when you become one, you realize you can’t avail yourself of the discounts because your credentials are not recognized by any travel authority.

Fraudulent Vacation Discount Cards – You pay for a vacation card thinking it will make your vacation a little cheaper, but then you realize that the card has so many restrictions that you can’t get the discounts you’re entitled to. OR if you do get a discount, it’s just taken off a “special price” and still comes down to the same price as everyone else is paying.

Protect yourself from these travel scams by following your gut instinct and being sceptical. Don’t be afraid to say no and assert yourself when these “agents” become pushy. Never give your credit card number over the phone in the name of “reserving” your slot. If they give you a time limit, say you need to think about it; being hurried is usually a sign of a scam. Before accepting the package, go the distance – check the hotel, the airline, etc. – and make sure they are working with this promotion at the prices the agent says they are. Buy tickets and packages only from genuine agencies and in person, if possible and remember, offers from phone calls or spam email are more likely to be scams.

What to Look for When Buying Sofas for Vacation Rentals

Vacation rental furniture must be durable in order to stand up to regular use by a wide variety of vacationers who may not care for your furnishings quite as well as you would like them to. Holiday rentals, by their nature, are occupied by a constantly transitioning parade of temporary residents who use them as a home base for family vacations, ski trips, weekends at the lake or corporate retreats in the mountains. While some renters are mindful of the furnishings and treat their temporary housing as if it was their home, many do not. Anyone who owns temporary rentals has either heard stories of raucous parties and trashed houses, or they have experienced these things themselves.

Knowing that your furniture will very likely be mistreated by at least some of the folks who call your rental property home for a weekend, a week or a month, it is imperative that you invest in furnishings that you will not have to replace every time a rowdy group of friends parties a bit too hard or a pair of permissive parents lets their children run loose with chocolate ice cream, crayons and fruit punch. This is particularly true when purchasing a sofa, since you know this piece of furniture will definitely be used on a daily basis and will take the brunt of any mishaps that may occur.

What to Look for When Vacation Rental Sofa Shopping

When shopping for vacation rental sofas, there are three main factors to keep in mind: They should be durable, washable and renewable. Other features that might not be deal breakers, but are certainly nice to have, include storage space and the ability to be separated and moved around to create a variety of seating arrangements.

Seeking out high-quality, durable sofas is a given when shopping for rental furnishings. Poorly made furniture will not last and is not worth the money, even if the sofa was incredibly cheap. If you have to replace your rental’s sofa every few months, or even every few years, you are not getting the value you need out of the piece. Therefore, shopping for sofas with sturdy construction from a reputable manufacturer is essential.

It is also important to keep in mind that even the most well-constructed sofa can still be damaged from spills, cuts, ill-mannered pets and rowdy guests. This is where choosing a washable fabric sofa from a company that offers replacement fabric, cushions and pieces comes into play. Washable sofa fabrics are a must-have and allow you to easily launder all of the sofa fabric at the end of the vacation season or when a guest soils the fabric during their stay. This alone can save you hundreds – or even thousands of dollars – while making it easy to keep your rental attractive and appealing to new guests.

Of course, you may have more than a spill to contend with if your renters managed to cut the sofa fabric, allowed their dog to chew up a sofa cushion or somehow managed to break one of the wood pieces on the arm or back of the sofa. If you purchased a sofa from a company that does not offer replacement pieces or fabrics, than this would mean costly repairs or needing to replace the sofa completely. But if you purchased the sofa from a company that allows you to easily order a single replacement cushion, new fabric pieces or new wood pieces, than you can inexpensively and conveniently have your sofa looking as good as new. This kind of renewability is an important part of getting the best value when furnishing rental properties.

Other Things to Consider When Shopping for Sofas

In addition to these must-have qualities, the sofas you choose for your rental properties can also serve additional functions, if the right sofa is chosen. For example, choosing a storage sofa that offers storage space under each cushion is a great way to make room for extra bedding, pillows and towels without having to purchase a cabinet or cluttering up shelves with these necessities.

If your rental caters to larger groups, you might want to also consider purchasing a sectional sofa that has multiple pieces that can be grouped together or separated to provide a variety of seating options. This will appeal to guests with varying needs, such as companies holding retreats, and is a great way to fit abundant seating into a small space.
